Radio control allows you to control your crane from a distance. Instead of using a pendant or control panel, the operator can use a transmitter to move around as long as they have a clear view of the load.
What Changes?
You now have the ability to remotely control every movement of the crane, including hoist up/down, traverse, and long travel.
- Stand clear of the load
- Better viewing position
- No cable to manage
Safety
This is the most important reason for conversion. Operators are able to control the crane from a distance, instead of standing under the load with a pendant.
For tight spaces and awkward loads, being able to move around is what makes the job safer.
Efficiency
- Improved operational speed
- No cable management
- Added mobility for the operator
- Better control from a viewing vantage point
This is why most operators don’t go back to using pendants once they’ve converted to radio systems.
Which Cranes Can Convert
This applies to most overhead and gantry cranes. Chain hoists, wire rope hoists, and monorail systems as well. If the system is electrically controlled, you can usually convert it to radio.
Irrespective of age, we’ve converted cranes that are over 20 years old. As long as the crane’s structure is sound and the electrics are safe, conversion is easy.
Cost
For converting your existing equipment, expect to pay between £2,000-4,000 depending on the crane and the control requirements.
A new crane with a radio system built in will cost £15,000+ for a basic system. If your crane is working fine, conversion is more reasonable than replacing.
Installation Time
Usually only one day, often less for simpler hoists. Fit receiver unit, plug into existing controls, configure transmitter, run a functionality test. Minimal disruption.
Is It Worth It
Busy workshop doing regular lifts? Almost always worth it.
Occasional use in small space? Possibly not essential.
Safety alone justifies it for most operations. Getting operators out from under loads is worth the cost.
